Then compare the financing.
Two offers are easier to judge when you put the same details side by side. Use this two-page checklist for an HVAC installation, another home project or an equipment purchase.

Five checks before choosing the payment.
- Match the purchase. Compare the same model, installation scope, condition, accessories and warranty.
- Get both prices. Ask for the cash price and financed price, including tax and required extras.
- Check money available. Record the amount borrowed and net proceeds after any deducted fees. Confirm that the seller will receive enough, on time.
- Compare the whole obligation. Record APR, payment frequency, term, total payments, separate fees and collateral. For leases, ask for the total to own and early purchase terms.
- Resolve the conditions. Verify funding timing, credit-inquiry stages, promotion deadlines and what remains before final approval.
A loan amount and a purchase budget can differ.
In an invented example, a $10,000 loan with a 5% deducted origination fee delivers $9,500 before other deductions. If the seller needs $10,000, you still have a $500 funding gap. This is arithmetic, not a lender offer.
A small monthly payment can reflect a longer obligation. Under a deferred-interest promotion, missing the payoff conditions can cause interest to be added back to the purchase date. Ask for the actual written terms.
Put it to work
Use your written offers.
Take the worksheet to your contractor or dealer, or use it while comparing lender disclosures. Keep the completed copy private and leave out account numbers, Social Security numbers and credit documents.
